Initiatives
Community Play: We want to inspire people to gather and host child-directed play sessions in their own communities. Loose parts make this a lot easier but so does changing our expectations about play. We have resources to help!
Street Play: In cities all over the world neighbors agree to close their street so that children can meet to play safely. In Houston this process is cumbersome and expensive. We are seeking volunteers to help us approach the City of Houston with requests and ideas to streamline this process and make it low-cost or free.
Recess in Schools: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a minimum one hour of vigorous activity per day for physical and mental health. We want to protect designated recess time and expand it. Do you want to connect with other caregivers and advocates to make this a reality in your child’s school?
Play Lots: Is there a vacant lot in your neighborhood? What would have to happen for it to become a designated area for neighborhood play? Let’s collaborate!
Other Ideas? Do you want to see more play in children’s lives? Do you want to connect with other people who believe children have the right to time and space that belongs to them? Let’s talk and see if there is something we can do.
